Last year, thousands packed into the city centre to watch young people from the Humber region race electric cars.

More than 5,000 people watched the Hull Street Race in 2019.

The Hull Street Race 2020 has been cancelled, its organisers have confirmed.

Greenpower Education Trust, the charity behind the electric racing event, confirmed in a statement that the 2020 event will be unable to go ahead.

Last year, thousands packed into the city centre to watch young people from the Humber region race electric cars they had designed and built.

This year’s event, originally planned for May, was initially postponed in March due to coronavirus.

But Greenpower has now announced that the event will be unable to go ahead after all council events were cancelled until November 2020.

The two organisations said they would discuss the possibility of holding the event in the future.

Councillor Stephen Brady, Leader of the council, said: “Hull City Council regrets that the Greenpower Hull Street Race will not take place in 2020. The Greenpower challenge encourages our young people into skilled roles in STEM and this year’s event was set to be even more ambitious that the inaugural edition in 2019.

"We hope to welcome Greenpower back to Hull for another fun, educational and family-friendly event in the future.”

Greenpower CEO Paul van Veggel “We’re disappointed that the Hull Street Race is unable to take place this year, but we hope to return to the streets of Hull in the not-so-distant future. Our priority remains the safety, wellbeing and welfare of our participants and we understand and fully support the decision of Hull City Council.

“The first street race in 2019 was a huge success and we’re grateful to the council for its continued support in providing young people the opportunity to showcase skills they have nurtured through the design, build, race challenge.”
