Hull City Council’s ongoing commitment to regenerating Hull city centre has been demonstrated by the relaunch of a grant scheme, aimed at bringing vacant property back into use and supporting new jobs.

The council was awarded £19.5m of government funding in November 2021 to ‘level up’ the city centre, of which £7.5m was allocated to creating a city centre grants scheme.

So far 31 businesses have been supported and delivered, including ResQ, which was supported by £750,000 of funding towards it £3m refurbishment of the former Hammonds of Hull building, where it now occupies four floors and has welcomed hundreds of new employees as a result.

In total, the grant scheme has helped to bring 19 buildings back into use and restore 14 heritage buildings, as well as occupying 18,399 sqm of previously unused floor space and supporting close to 900 new jobs across the city.

It has also helped to bring around £13 million of private investment to Hull.

A limited amount of funding is still available and so the scheme is now reopening for new applications which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and will need to be supported by a credible and deliverable business plan.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, portfolio holder for economic renewal, housing and organisation development, said: “This grant scheme has helped to realise the fantastic potential of our city centre.

“It shows Hull city council’s continued commitment to regenerating the city centre and creating new jobs for our residents.”
