A prominent Hull business which became a major backer of the 2017 City of Culture year has seen turnover pass the £100m mark.

Sewell Ventures, which includes Sewell Construction, Sewell Retail and Sewell Facilities Management, said 2017 had been “another positive year” for the company, but admitted some parts of the group had experienced “increasingly challenging trading market conditions.”

The company saw turnover rise from £99.5m in 2016 to £100.4m last year, according to recently filed accounts. Sewell Ventures reported a £571,000 profit for the year ending December 31, 2017.

Directors from the business said: “As a long-established Hull business, the directors are delighted to have supported Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

“The group committed a six-figure sponsorship amount to be a major partner for the event, which helped to put Hull and the wider Yorkshire region on the international stage during 2017."
