Businesses in Hull are pulling together to protect key workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

The city’s companies are donating equipment and vital funds to support frontline staff.

Hull City Council put a call out for donations of protective equipment (PPE) to be distributed among workers in areas such as adult social care.

The local authority appealed to East Yorkshire businesses for masks, gloves, aprons, goggles and other PPE for care home workers and staff supporting people in their own homes.

Firms including Jordans, Victory Leisure Homes, Riva Foods, Humdinger, JR Rix & Sons, Donaldson’s, Atlas and Bright Blue Foods all donated equipment.

Companies all across the city are helping vulnerable people during the outbreak. This includes Humber Street Distillery, which is producing industrial alcohol for hand sanitiser, and Croda, which has supplied glycerine.

Hull tailor Cock of the Walk is making thousands of scrubs for NHS staff, while Advanced Plastics in Sutton Fields is making face masks and the University of Hull is manufacturing protective face equipment.

JR Rix & Sons has given £10,000 to Hull firm NFire Labs, which has invented a two-in-one respirator mask and visor to protect NHS staff. Hull City Council has assisted Nfire with an ICT grant. Visit the gofundme page to donate.

Mark Jones, Hull City Council’s director of regeneration, said: “Every day, frontline staff and other key workers across Hull are putting themselves at risk to support people who need care.

“These are just a few examples of the terrific support that the city’s businesses are offering to make sure these members of staff can be kept as safe as possible while they continue to put others ahead of themselves.”
