Family-owned construction firm, Hobson & Porter, is celebrating a bumper year after winning several multi-million contracts and expanding beyond its Humberside heartland.
Hobson & Porter, which was established in the 1970s, is a major player in the region’s education sector and has recently started work on several projects across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
The firm, which employees 119 people, has an extensive public sector client base complemented with large local private organisations, delivering a 90% of repeat business.
In the 18 months to September 2024, Hobson & Porter reported turnover of £80.5m, compared to £48m in the 12 months to the end of March 2023. Pre-tax profits for the 18-month period, were £147,000.
Business development director, Joe Booth, said: “Our geographic growth into the wider Yorkshire and Lincolnshire market offers a larger catchment area where we select the best projects that are strategic to our development.
“However, it means we can still have control and utilise a supply chain we know and trust to help us deliver those projects. Our success is down to strategically targeting certain types of projects and clients that we know we can work with to deliver successful projects. That’s not only good us, but the client as well.”
In York, the company is now working on a £1.4m extension at St Paul’s Nursery School in the city’s Holgate area.
The project, on behalf of City of York Council, also involves internal alterations and the refurbishment of the existing Grade II listed nursery building.
This latest project follows Hobson & Porter starting work earlier this year on a transformational extension at Cambridge Park Academy in Grimsby, which will almost double the size of its sixth form college for SEND pupils.
The project is part of the expansion of North East Lincolnshire Council’s sufficiency strategy for special educational needs and alternative provision. Once work completes, the council
In Skegness, Hobson & Porter is building a new £12m learning campus for Skegness TEC (Training, Education and Careers).
The company typically delivers between £2m and £3m worth of refurbishment work in schools and colleges throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, whilst they’re closed for the summer holidays.
Richard Hunter, managing director at Hobson & Porter, said: “We have a proven track record and a strong reputation for continually producing an exceptional standard of work in the education sector and this has made it a key part of our business.
“Much of our success is due to our ability to plan for and meet the tight deadlines the sector faces, with a lot of rapid-delivery and complex projects typically crammed into the summer months, when schools and colleges are closed.”
