Women and girls in Hull thinking about a career in manufacturing, engineering, construction, digital or renewable energy are urged to attend a Women in Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) careers event in Hull’s Guildhall.

With over 30 of the Humber’s leading employers in attendance, the event will be an opportunity for women, girls and their parents/carers to meet others already working in the manufacturing and engineering sectors, find out about current vacancies, discover what training and qualifications are needed and learn about apprenticeship opportunities.

Former science teacher, Carrie Grimbleby, channelled her passion for the planet into a new career in renewable energy.

Carrie (pictured above) studied for a Masters degree in renewable energy and came across Green Port Hull’s WiME initiative when job searching post-graduation.

Through a WiME careers event, she secured her first role in the industry with Associated British Ports.

Carrie said: “I was introduced to women from companies such as ABP, Siemens Gamesa and more, where I chatted to them about graduate opportunities.

“It was great to discover their career paths, particularly those who had recently had a change of career, something people shouldn’t be afraid of.

“I want women and girls to know it is possible to have a career in manufacturing, engineering or renewable energy, regardless of their age.

“WiME is a fantastic starting point and I urge people to visit the careers event and find out more.”

In the Humber region, manufacturing contributes to 17 per cent of employment compared 8.7 per cent nationally.

Despite the high demand for people with STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) qualifications, women are under-represented in these roles which offer competitive pay and attractive career prospects, whilst also playing an important part in the region’s economy.

Cllr Linda Tock, portfolio holder for Hull Training at Hull City Council, said: “This is a really exciting event and a brilliant opportunity for women and girls in our city to discover ways in which they can helped into potential new careers.

“The council is keen to support them on their journeys in any way it can, so I am delighted that we are able to host the next WiME careers event.”

Dr Kirsty Clode, chair of WiME, added: “Our events are designed to showcase the amazing opportunities in our region for women and girls, whilst also dispelling misconceptions about careers in engineering, manufacturing, construction, digital and renewables.

“There are a wealth of rewarding roles calling for innovation, problem-solving, adaptability and collaboration – all of which women are great at.”

The WiME careers event is free and will be held from 4:30-6pm in the Guildhall on Wednesday 9 October.
